UNSEEN EDIBLE – LICHENS AS A SOURCE OF NUTRITION

Julia Schwarz

28.9.–7.10.2018

Something can be done about food shortages, according to Julia Schwarz. The world’s population is growing, harvests are failing, the climate is becoming increasingly extreme. As a consequence, a shortfall in the amount food has been forecast. As a speculative design project, UNSEEN EDIBLE addressed the super-resistant and nutritious lichen as a future food source and provided initial impressions of the tastes that await us, serving up lichen bread and lichen brandy. The fact that this hardy plant, often confused with moss, even grows on Mars inspired the imagination of hungry visitors.
