And the winner is... Studio Formafantasma!
Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi from Studio Formafantasma win with their souvenir "Vienna Playing Cards" the design contest "European Home Run", that was curated by Lilli Hollein. Héctor Serrano [more] with his "Pop-up Vienna" emerged as the winner of the public vote. Both souvenirs go into production.
Millions of people visit Vienna every year. Many of them want to take a piece of the city on the Danube home with them. A representation of everything that makes Vienna so very special. Its Imperial charm, of course – but also the new, young and creative flair of the city.
What form should a quintessentially Viennese souvenir for the 21st century take? In all, teams of designers from six different European countries went in search of answers to this question before submitting their final designs for the Vienna Tourist Board's European Home Run competition. On October 24, 2012 the competition winner was revealed alongside the winner of the public vote, at the tourism conference hosted by the Vienna Tourist Board at the Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art (MAK). The goal of the competition is to arrive at various interpretations of the souvenir that embody the contemporary face of Vienna as a creative city, with vast potential and proud achievements in the field of design.

Moderated by Harald Gründl
The exhibition shows design at a turning point. Design plays a key role in the remoulding of society to be capable of dealing with the future, as well as in the formulation of sustainable lifestyles based on global solidarity: tools for the design revolution are sustainable design strategies that can make a socially, environmentally and ethically sustainable future reality. Learning from each other, experimental strategies and concepts in connection with scientifically based methods are in the foreground.
Three of the pilot projects conceived specially for the exhibition outline future working scenarios for designers and a paradigmatic shift in the way the discipline of design is regarded. Experimentation, emancipation from traditional notions of products or design is gaining in significance. Mobility, food and housing, as areas of life, provide the scenarios for new, complex forms of environmental design. They connect with the visitors’ everyday reality, and invite them to engage critically with the subject of sustainablity and their own consumer culture.
An exhibition by the IDRV – Institute of Design Research Vienna in cooperation with designaustria.
On view are pilot projects by DANKLHAMPEL, breadedEscalope, and Spirit Design.

Design from the Netherlands has played a pivotal role in the design history of the 20th and 21st centuries. And since the 1990s, at the latest, "Dutch Design" has existed as a brand of sorts, generating major impulses for the international design field. One of the centers of Dutch Design has formed around the Philips Design Bureau and the Design Academy in Eindhoven, and its graduates include well-known figures such as Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius and the two guests of d>link.05, Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (Formafantasma).
Just what is so special about the creative environment there? What local conditions are especially helpful to the young designers in advancing their experimental way of working between reform and tradition, between high-tech and hand craftsmanship?
Together with the duo Formafantasma and Renny Ramakers, who has had a strong influence on contemporary developments as a co-founder of Droog Design, d>link.05 will attempt to grasp the "Eindhoven Phenomenon" and make out both similarities and differences to the cultural, economic and educational situation in Vienna.

Talking about: Cooperation
Lectures with Hadi Teherani (DE) & Martí Guixé (ES)
Date: TODAY, Sep 30, from 17:00
Venue: k/hauskino, Akademiestraße 13, 1010 Vienna
The two lectures deal with the topic of the cooperation between designer and producer. There [more] is a need on both sides to understand processes and structures, networked thinking and openness. Do designers see themselves and their actions as design service providers or as author service providers? How does the exchange take place and what hurdles have to be overcome on the way? The Spanish designer Marti Guixé and the German architect Hadi Teherani answer these questions from their own standpoints.
