Let there be light!
The collaboration with the young Czech designer Klara Šumová has been a stroke of luck so far, both designer and manufacturer are taken back to their "roots”: Klara comes from a town very close to the former glass production site of Bakalowits (almost all Austrian chandelier manufacturers and glass producers have Bohemian roots). The Viennese company takes the designer - who now works primarily with wood - back to the early years of her studies, focusing on glass and chandelier production! Klára Šumová will be working in a very precise knowledge of the tradition, but also in the spirit of contemporary design, exactly as she does at "minimal wood".

The sheared comb
The young Thomas Petz is again the last producers of goods made of horn. The only 26-year old entrepreneur has taken over the factory from his grandfather and learned from him. Combs, brushes (brush-making in cooperation with Norbert Meier!), Jewelry, spoons and many other horn items are part of his program.
The pleasure to deal with both companies, has Matylda Krzykowski, a Polish-born designer who grew up in Germany and now works in Maastricht. She is also known as a curator, stage designer and design blogger. She is an expert not only for products but also for telling their stories. All in all a very promising cooperation.

Was kostet die Teilnahme? Was wird dafür geboten? Wie wird die Grafik heuer aussehen? Welche Farbe haben die Stühle? Was ist neu?

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
© Kollektiv Fischka/fischka.com, Mark Braun und Leonid Rath von J. & L. Lobmeyr, 2010
Mark Braun and J. & L. Lobmeyr at Gallery Libby Sellers
Braun's proposal for the series saw a water carafe, handcrafted by Lobmeyr, engraved with one of seven glaciers, seven [more] lakes or seven rivers from across the globe. The collaboration between Braun, Lobmeyr and Gallery Libby Sellers will include the addition of an eighth river - London's Thames - launched exclusively at the gallery in December 2011.
For Braun and Lobmeyr 'Fortune' takes on a different connotation: water is the luxury here, as while these international waterways cover 70 per cent of the planet's surface, they are a threatened resource. By engraving, etching and sandblasting images of these waters (as taken from Google Earth) onto the carafes, the Fotrtune series is frozen a moment in a torrent of change. The waterways were chosen for their fragility or importance. For example, Fortune: Lake Baikal has a connection to one of the largest freshwater sources; Fortune: Lambert Glacier shows the largest glacier in the Antarctic, which is slowly melting; Fortune: River Euphrates depicts an important lifeline for several surrounding countries; while Fortune: River Thames celebrates the pivotal role the river has played as a thoroughfare to London's prosperity. As Braun has said, 'We all know that this water will be the new gold.'
The numbered series, and exclusive River Thames carafe, make the perfect gift as each are signed and detail the name of the body of water, its size and the time the carafe took to engrave. A range of postcard images by graphic designer Anna Sartorius accompanies the series. The Fortune series was initiated as part of Vienna Design Week.
