Aqua Mobile – Folded Objects

3.–10.10.2010

The Catalan origami artist Joan Sallas has been working for 10 years with the materials of paper and textiles. He has devoted himself in numerous international exhibitions and publications to exploring the history of the art of folding, is the founder of the Freiburg Origami School, and holds lectures and conducts workshops on folding throughout Europe.
For the Hofmobiliendepot [Imperial Furniture Collection] he has designed an Aqua Mobile: over-dimensional marine animals made of folded paper will float through the winter garden of the museum, temporarily transforming the area into a colourful aquarium. It can be seen as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2010.

This work falls within the context of the current special exhibition at the Hofmobiliendepot: Gefaltete Schönheit – Meisterwerke der Serviettenfaltkunst [Folded Beauty – Masterpieces of the Art of Napkin Folding], which illustrates with approximately 150 table napkins and 40 centrepieces the development of the art of folding over the centuries.

At the opening Joan Sallas will offer the guests the chance to join him in making their own marine creations from paper.
