DESIGNING LOCALITY
Youarehere Vienna
30.9.–9.10.2016
Location Margareten, an inner courtyard. For ten days, YouarehereVienna started out from the so-called Sehsaal and honed district awareness – the viewpoint was taken from the outside, mind you!
YouarehereVienna – this was simultaneously the process of inaugurating a digital city guide which intensively investigated the theory and practice of “Be(com)ing Local” within the framework of a temporary, open editors office. And its extraordinary persistence and positive impulses were rewarded with an acknowledgement at the Erste Bank ExtraVALUE Design Award presentation.
Participation – calligraphy workshops, city excursions, and talks with locality experts – was planned to break down intercultural (linguistic) barriers, mediate between arrivals and local residents, and provide alternative navigation through the district connected in this way.
Contents were generated, illustrated, and translated into the four languages of the guide – German, English, Arabic, Farsi/Dari – on site.
Besides a neighborhood guide, the platform includes useful tips for new Viennese. For instance, dogs are unclean in the Arabian cultural region, but for the Viennese they are a much-loved pet.
Something that we should not withhold from anyone.
