SONIC RUG – A FREQUENCY MODULATING TEXTILE INTERFACE
Selina Reiterer, Ruby Marie Hotel & Bar

SONIC RUG is the result of an artistic approach to smart textiles. The project explores the possibilities of connecting soft material to the digital space, manifesting in an interactive installation: A basic frequency can be triggered, amplified, and distorted by touching different parts on the surface. The fluffy texture, operating as a sensor, is connected to a program – elongated and repeated sounds are created, wandering from harmonic variations to clusters and distortions, tunes are cumulating into a blast of noise. Not the aesthetics of technology are in the forefront, but tangible values of handicrafts and the quality of a soft and comfortable texture.
