Bending wood is a traditional processing method that became widespread in Europe, in part thanks to Vienna’s long-established Thonet company. Starting with this technique, the Three-Dimensional Design and Model Building at Vienna’s University of Technology examined the field of product design at the intersection of architecture and art. In the 2017 summer semester, students turned their attention to the creative and constructional potential of self-forming processes and the material of wood. The result, with the aid of Thonet, was objects of bentwood elements that support the body, and they were displayed in the spectacular TVFA-Halle as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2017.
