LAURIDS GALLÉE with M. Maurer
Laurids Gallée, M. MAURER, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK
28.9.–6.10.2018
Anachronism meets the avant-garde: Laurids Gallée and the rich trove of forms of a veritable jewel in a back courtyard. Since 1863, the passementarie factory M. Maurer in the 7th district has produced all kinds of textiles that can be used as decorations: fringe, ribbons, borders, cords, braid, tassels – and the gilded or silvery square cord frequently used to adorn the shoulders of military officers’ uniforms. At the initiative of the Austrian designer Gallée, these square cords, produced as one-offs in a rainbow of colors and employed atmospherically with the aid of geometric lamps, became coiled heralds of a magically gleaming interplay of craftsmanship and design.
