Power outages lasting at least twelve hours a day are still the norm in certain regions of India. The social-business project Seafire Power foregrounds the portable and long-lived folding light “Batti” in a simple business and financing model: While the reading and table lamps commonly used there were sold inexpensively to NGOs, European companies should be convinced to purchase the simple light sources as ethically responsible giveaways to help bring light into someone’s life. The design object was shown in the form of an installation at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK’s Festival Headquarters.
