In PLATO’S NIGHTMARE, Timotheus Tomicek takes up the philosopher’s allegory of the cave, and his installation in Bildraum 01 explores phe­nomena of visual perception and projection. The arc extends from cave painting to the classical age to the ques­tion of knowledge in today’s complex visual imagery. Tomicek’s cave, constructed in the space, is lined with a colorful mix of thousands of fragmentary images taken from newspapers and mag­azines. A flickering symbol of the rush of associations triggered by the media, of deconstructed realities and multilayered perceptions – with plenty of space for individual experience and interpretation. A talk will be part of the opening cocktail.
