Games play an important and often underestimated role in our society. They pick up on the mechanisms of human coexistence, transform them, and present us with a stylised mirror image of life. Ideally we can reflect on routines and test creative solutions like this. Also games are refreshing refuge into a world where one can safely risk, win and lose. With its focus on game design VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2019 aims to show the potentials of digital games. The relevance of games that we experience in physical space, however, is not diminished by the breath-taking surge of computer games. That is why VIENNA DESIGN WEEK initiated an installation to show precisely that: The Viennese concrete 3D-printing start-up Printstones produced four oversized board games after designs by buero bauer, MATAKA-Design, Johanna Pichlbauer and Klemens Schillinger to rediscover the former canteen of the building as a public playing field.
