ohne butter

25.9.–4.10.2020

The temporary showroom of the vintage design shop ohne butter was a true insider tip at VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2020. In an empty apartment in the First District, the shop owners guided visitors personally on a tour of the premises, which, while offering a voyage through the history of design in their own right, had also been specially fitted out with items of furniture from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The walls, for example, were clad with carpet, cork, or timber and the rooms represented a range of styles, as embodied by an exceptional bathroom from the 1970s. The displayed items of furniture, many manufactured in Italy, complemented these interiors perfectly. They impressively demonstrated the influence of design and furniture on our senses and the ways in which these have evolved over the years both formally and in terms of production method. The exhibition offered overwhelming diversity, from the velvet of a 1970’s sofa and the luster of a mouth-blown Murano glass to 70-year-old wicker chairs and a hand-carved rosewood table. All in an apartment in the heart of Vienna that one would normally never be able to enter. An enjoyable spin-off from the visit was the opportunity to enjoy the matchless view from the apartment onto the towers of two of Vienna’s city center churches (St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Maria am Gestade) – simply heavenly!
