On the evening of the award ceremony of SUPERSCAPE 2020, gentle drizzle fell upon the umbrellas in the courtyard of WEST in the former Sophienspital (Festival Headquarters 2018). Visitors were invited to enjoy a drink and a chat in the relaxed, autumnal atmosphere before heading inside – wearing masks – to take part in the ceremony.
Superscape is organized biennially and honors innovative ideas in the field of architecture and urban design. The focus of this year’s edition was the subject “Mixed-use City – living, working, and urban production”. In a moderated talk involving the organizers JP Immobilien and WBV-GPA and the Vienna Business Agency, visions and solutions for tomorrow’s living spaces were discussed.
The highpoint of the evening was the award of the 10,000 euro prize. This year, this went to Eva Herunter and her project “Die anderen Räume” (The Other Spaces). The architect, who was also represented at VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2020 by the project ARCHE, which addressed the issue of the vacant plot, created a utopian vision of the City of Vienna in 2050 in which nature will increasingly reconquer the city’s former industrial areas. The jury was convinced by the provocative simplicity and poetry of the project. In addition to this, the supplementary “Founders Lab” prize was awarded, in cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency, to Vanessa Braun and Daniel Löschenbrand for their project “Stadtbauernhof” (Urban Farm). The get-together after the award ceremony gave visitors the opportunity to examine all the shortlisted projects.
