THE JEST ROOM

The Student Hotel

25.9.–4.10.2020

“MUSHROOM, BEDROOM, BEGLOOM”, shone out in gaudy capital letters from the façade of the Student Hotel in the Second District. The location-specific installation by the artist Theresa Hattinger had been specially developed for the Student Hotel. In cooperation with VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, she created a temporary, atmospheric space out of material and typography: the JEST ROOM, a room that knows that it isn’t a room at all, that invites guests to linger and wants to be contemplated, that cannot function without imagination. For Hattinger, the installation was a means of asking the perpetually topical question of how and for whom a place is usable – especially when it is in the immediate vicinity of commercially-used space.

The Student Hotel is not a normal hotel: The Dutch chain, which has also had a branch in Vienna since May 2020, believes in a closely-knit community, unique design, and a hybrid hospitality model, which is tailored to meet the needs of all those with the soul of a student.
