PEOPLE IN THE PORCELAIN FACTORY
p_art Galerie, Polnisches Institut Wien
24.9.–3.10.2021
Making the invisible visible: The Polish Institute Vienna is exhibiting the dinner service “Human Trace” that was produced as part of a research project, in which the anthropologist Ewa Klekot and the ceramic artist Arkadiusz Szwed focused on the “human factor” and the appreciation of this in the porcelain industry. During the manufacturing process, the factory workers wore gloves coated with cobalt salts. While their fingerprints initially remained almost invisible, these emerged in a deeply dark shade of blue when the pieces were fired. In this way, the manual skills and the rich wealth of experience of the people in the background come to the fore. Portraits of and quotations from the participating factory workers surround the burnt-in traces of their work in this special exhibition organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Polish Institute Vienna.
