HERMANN CZECH AND THONET VIENNA – TRADITION DESIGNS THE FUTURE

Gebrüder Thonet Vienna (GTV)

16.–25.9.2022

Michael Thonet (1796–1871) and his five sons were the most successful furniture designers of the industrial age. They jointly founded the company Gebrüder Thonet in 1853. Since 1976, it has been known as Gebrüder Thonet Vienna and has offered new editions of now historic objects as it walks the tightrope between tradition and innovation, continuity and renewal. The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is being marked by the exhibition of a chair that was designed by Hermann Czech in 1994 and whose clear abstract lines are so in tune with the steam-curved beechwood that they perfectly continue the unmistakable Thonet style of the late nineteenth century. The “Czech Chair”: an iconic item of furniture, whose timeless design is particularly accentuated by the comparison with current pieces from GTV. More information on the cinema afternoon at Top Kino can be found on the website of Gebrüder Thonet Vienna.
