Google Maps increasingly determines which parts of the city are noticed and used. At the same time, users voluntarily enhance the platform by uploading places, photos, information, and evaluations – in a process that Google deceptively calls participation. But to what extent are users really part of this design process? MARKED MAPS is a work produced by the artists’ group Laokoon with the support of KÖR – Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien, in which a Google data portrait of Vienna is created and then played back to the people of the city. Cosima Terrasse presents her exploration of Vienna’s digital doppelganger, addresses the interaction between technology, design, and the city, and asks what data can tell us, besides the size of a schnitzel and excessive waiting times.
