JAN BOELEN: BIOREGIONAL DESIGN PRACTICES

Wirtschaftsagentur Wien

24.9.2024, 2pm–5pm

How can unused local resources be transformed into innovative materials for design and architecture? In order to answer questions like this, the interdisciplinary research design laboratory Atelier LUMA developed the bioregional design approach, which also underpins the pilot project BIOFABRIQUE VIENNA. Before the interactive part of the workshop, Jan Boelen, artistic director of Atelier LUMA, will talk about how bioregional practices can be used to create the necessary ecosystem together with experts from the creative industries, science, the public sector and business.

In parallel with this, an exhibition shows how bioregional design practices were used during the hundred-day pilot phase of BIOFABRIQUE VIENNA. The building materials developed during this phase were used by studio dreiSt. in the design of the hospitality area of the festival: the BIOFABRIQUE CANTEEN. Following the workshop, the collective will present these and give an insight into their design process.

BIOFABRIQUE VIENNA is a pilot project of the Vienna Business Agency and Atelier LUMA, a program of LUMA Arles, in partnership with TU Wien (Institute for Architectural Design).
