FOKUS: AGEING

Sandra Nuut, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, Hannah Rosa Oellinger und Manfred Rainer

26.9.–5.10.2025

Design has a complex relationship with age. While mass-produced design objects are often valued for their smooth, pristine surfaces, some designers find inspiration in the passage of time. These designers embrace aging as a creative force. They allow nature and the environment to shape materials, embrace transformation, and draw from familial knowledge and cultural memory. Here, signs of decay, rust, wear, and so on are resources to work with rather than flaws or wrinkles to smooth out.

Structured into the three chapters “Working with Nature”, “Embracing Change”, and “Collaborating With the Past and Present”, guest curator Sandra Nuut brings together international design positions that deal with aging in poetic, experimental, and conceptual ways.

With works by: Valentin Bauer, Alice Bonanomi, Jakob Brix, Chai Dienn, Martina Dimitrova, Vilius Dringelis, Dawid Fik, Jeremy Hollister, Elo-Reet Järv, Magda Jugo, Annika Kiidron, Liucija Kostiva, Laurenz Kyral, Bertille Laguet, Dong Liu, Ejla Miletić, Cristiano Picão Pereira, Danilo Reis, Kati Saarits, Flora Sommer, Studio Hanna Whitehead, Studio Kiki Astner, Studio Kollektiir, STUDIOppl, Valentina Sturn, and Ketli Tiitsar
