PLAY VS. GAME

VIENNA DESIGN WEEK

4.10.2019, 4.30pm

Has the digital turn changed the game forever? At present, since children play on screens and managers play with Legos, one could ask who, when, and for what purpose games are played. The spectrum seems to be overwhelming and the answers varied. Along the keywords gamification, target-group adequacy, and scientific and educational relevance, the discussion will delve into the question concerning the philosophical, personal, and social meaning of games and play, linking it with burning design questions: How can the complex  parameters from the debate be included in the field of (graphic) design? Should a game attempt to portray reality? Or should it present a caricature? Where are the borders of analogue and digital games? And how’s a game created? Drawing on the festival format Game Design, experts will share their thoughts on a literally discursive playing field.

With: Philipp Ehmann (Designer of analogue games), Sabine Harrer (Tampere University, Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies), Jogi J. Neufeld (SUBOTRON), Margarete Jahrmann (University of Applied Arts), Ernst Strouhal (University of Applied Arts)
