Focus District Landstraße
May we invite you … to the Third? Landstraße is untypical amongst Vienna’s inner districts. It is the only one that doesn’t end at the outer ring road, the Gürtel, but extends even further from the city center. Correspondingly, the area, which dates back to Vienna’s first formal expansion in 1850 and is characterized by both traditional and brand new residential neighborhoods, is also notable for a wide range of historical functions. Here: palaces, embassies, and landmarks such as the Hochstrahlbrunnen, the Belvedere Palace, or the Hundertwasserhaus. There: industry, commerce, and the former military complex of the Arsenal. The area around the former abattoir in the south is now a well-known research and media hub. But one thing is perhaps less well known: Not far from here there was once a port. In 1803, the so-called Wiener Neustadt Canal was opened. The 63-kilometer-long waterway was mainly used to transport wood, bricks, and coal and extended deep into the district of Landstraße, where street names such as Hafengasse or Am Kanal continue to recall this earlier age of navigation. Now, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is also docking in the heart of the 3rd district with a Festival Headquarters and a program that, once again, will send waves right across the city. Ahoy in the City Full of Design!
