Urban Food & Design
The City as a Resource
This year's edition of Urban Food & Design, the joint format of the Vienna Business Agency and the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, is focussing on the topic of innovation in recyclable materials. How can previously unused resources in the city - including those from food production - be developed into new materials for architecture and design? How can these be used sensibly in the catering and hospitality sector?
Find out about this and much more further down in this newsletter and, of course, at our festival headquarters in September. There will not only be an exhibition on this topic, but also a practical test: the Biofabrique canteen run by Karma Food. You can enjoy refreshments there for the entire duration of the festival.
We also invite all night owls to the festival bar at Café Florida. With a good atmosphere and fine drinks, it is still the place to go late at night for anyone who hasn't had enough of the festival programme.

Visit the exhibition of the 100-day pilot project
Is it possible to develop innovative materials for future urban projects from unused local resources within 100 days?
The exhibition at the festival headquarters will focus on the research results of the first Biofabrique Vienna. It will show, for example, how new materials are created from spent grains or the excavated material from the U2xU5 underground railway extension. At the same time, the exhibition offers solutions for the development of future urban recycling systems.
Biofabrique Vienna is a pilot project of the Vienna Business Agency and Atelier LUMA, a programme of LUMA Arles, in partnership with the Institute of Architecture and Design at Vienna University of Technology. Other partners are Bäckerei Ströck, Wienerberger AG and Wiener Linien.
BIOFABRIQUE CANTEEN
Hospitality area made of materials from Biofabrique Vienna
Bringing circular design to life: In the Biofabrique canteen - the hospitality area in the festival centre - festival visitors can linger on modular furniture made from residual materials such as excavated building site rubble or food scraps.
The materials used come from the Biofabrique Vienna research project, while the Viennese collective studio dreiSt., which was previously selected in an open call, was responsible for the design.
Karma Food
Lots of fresh vegetables, even more spice and a good pinch of feel-good factor - that's lunch for Simone and Adi Raihmann. The two have been doing it for ten years now, when they fulfilled their absolute dream with Karma Food. They now have eight locations with 33 chefs who not only serve Karma Food, but also put people in a good mood. In 2024, they will also be involved in the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK as a catering partner, as Karma Food is taking over the festival café in the festival headquarters. As usual, there will be curry and co. for lunch, Karma Sweets and, of course, good coffee.

Festival bar at Café Florida
For all those who still haven't had enough! With this year's festival bar, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and Café Florida are creating a meeting place where you can chat, celebrate and drink in the best company every evening, just like under palm trees. In addition to a new lighting design realised with Ursula Klein from schulteswien (Passionswege 2022) and glass objects by Juliana Maurer, the trendy meeting place in the 7th district presents a different winemaker from the Weinskandal portfolio every day. As a further highlight, Karma Food will be serving the best stuzzichini under the Florida sun at the Italian aperitivo on 26 September. Salute!
