issue 9
issue 9 is an independent shoe brand based in Vienna that manufactures sneakers with a fully closed-loop life cycle. “Disappointed by the fashion industry’s superficial sustainability concepts and massive overproduction, we are proving that local, demand-driven manufacturing is possible. Our sneakers combine 3D-printed soles with traditionally sewn uppers, which are assembled using our proprietary adhesive-free bonding technology. This makes it easy to repair and eventually disassemble each shoe so that every component – safely composted or fully recycled – can be directed to its intended recycling path. Beyond the product itself, our microfactory model is easily replicable, enabling the creation of a decentralized network of local production and repair centers. This brings manufacturing closer to where demand is and drastically shortens transportation distances.”
