The Department for Spatial and Sustainable Design of the Institute of Architecture and Design at the Vienna University of Technology increasingly grants a central position to conveying a kind of design, both in teaching and research, that conserves resources and is ecologically friendly. This involves bringing to the fore the ‘soft factors’ of the planning process, which extend far beyond the knowledge of structural engineering or building physics. Sustainability is not only dealt with in terms of structure, but also holistically, which means taking social, cultural, and economic factors into account.
