Discoveries in Hietzing: From Josef Lackner’s Brutalist church to Karl Schartelmüller’s superblock as a garden city.
 

Hietzing is a district full of gems. Some are well-known, others less so. The breadth of what the area between the Lainzer Tiergarten and the Schönbrunn Palace Gardens has to offer becomes apparent on a walk to two outstanding architectural gems. For example, Josef Lackner’s exploration of church architecture in the 1960s is embodied here in the reinforced concrete cube of the Council Memorial Church Lainz-Speising, which, with its four entrances, symbolizes openness to all people. After touring the interior of the church, a short walk to the Lockerwiese residential complex – Vienna’s second-largest garden city with over 750 residential units – further illustrates the unique concept of a superblock as a garden city.
