Mathias Leberbauer and Valentin Bauer share an interest in ritual, space, and the cultural significance of design. In the Maria am Gestade church, they present two contemporary objects that take up liturgical forms and translate them into a new context. With COMMUNIO, a subtle intervention in the sacred space, they complement the image of one of Vienna’s most impressive churches, building a bridge between design, ceremony, and everyday life. On 28.9., Leberbauer and Bauer, accompanied by Pastor Dominic O’Toole, invite visitors on a journey through the history, present, and future of sacred interior design.

Churches are among the oldest structures built for gathering. While attention is often drawn to their magnificent facades, this tour focuses on the interior architecture of sacred spaces. The objects by Mathias Leberbauer and Valentin Bauer bridge the gap between sacred and secular design. To gain a more holistic understanding of what connects and divides us, visitors to the Maria am Gestade church are taken on a journey through the past, present, and future. Priest Dominic O’Toole also provides personal insights into the history and significance of his church.
