The title of the presentation alludes to the fragility of ceramic artifacts and demands that we carefully manage our material culture and environment. Hardly any of us is aware how the espresso cup from which we are drinking was produced or can accurately name the material from which it is made. Products like these can be the mirror that enables us to compare our own talents with the work of others. But this is only possible if we have the ability to recognize the artisanal skills involved in making an object. In order to promote this ability, the program Manual and Material Culture displays finished ceramic products that were created during or after the course alongside a performative arrangement of the corresponding molds and rough castings that are produced in situ.
