International residency programs enable designers, artists and architects to explore new cultures, places and sources of inspiration for their work. Living, working and producing new art and design in a stimulating environment while visiting a different country – ideally free of economic constraints – can provide participants with not only new perspectives, but also new areas of work and relationships. How do residency programs function? Who runs them? And who is eligible to take part? How can sustainable alliances be established during short-term stays? And what kinds of personal experiences and insights have the Austrian and Finnish panelists gained from participating in or organizing residencies?
