What if we understood gardening as more of a sport than a hobby, passion or even weighty obligation? This is the starting point of the project #GARDENFIT, which propagates a type of sport that is centered on gardening but seeks to trigger a paradigm change. The current pandemic crisis is encouraging us, especially those of us who live in cities, to reinvent our infrastructure and the way we live, work and spend our leisure time. Sedentary jobs, unhealthy diets, short-sighted consumer behavior and methods of food production are symptoms of what, to date, has been regarded as a modern lifestyle. In order to grasp these problems – literally – by their roots, the team behind this project believes that we merely need to reframe the notion of garden work. Through their active participation in the intervention #GARDENFIT, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK audience will become more aware of the importance of appropriating and greening the public realm and of the pleasure to be gained from moving outdoors: “Let’s change our cities, waistlines and food systems!”
