LOBMEYR has time and again demonstrated its craftsmanship, versatility, and willingness to engage in dialogue through an unrivaled series of Passionswege projects. A retrospective exhibition designed by Hubmann-Vass at the historic shop of this heritage-steeped Viennese business looks back on this illustrious history.
LOBMEYR has been part of the Passionswege from the very beginning. Actually, even longer than that, since Martino Gamper and Kim Tien had already let their creativity run wild at LOBMEYR for the 2006 pilot series. Other collaborations include Max Lamb, Bertille & Mathieu, Maxim Velčovský, Mark Braun, and eleven other artists and designers. Time and again, the knowledge of glass, cutting, and finishing – passed down through generations – has served as the starting point for experiments. In 2017, for example, Jólan van der Wiel incorporated natural forces and the movement of water into the design process for his vase. Most recently, in 2024, Flora Lechner developed TAMED IMBALANCE, a mobile that brings together glass, balance, and movement. Philippe Malouin’s installation TIME ELAPSED became part of an exhibition on the theme of luxury at the V&A Museum in London. Mark Braun’s installation evolved into a best-selling series that became part of the Home Collection of the fashion house Dior, among others. These diverse projects showcase the traditional workshop not as a static archive, but as a place where artisanal knowledge continually encounters new creative challenges.
Passionswege Perspectives: To mark its 20th anniversary, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has invited five Passionswege pairings to look back on their shared history and reflect on the relationships that the format has fostered between artisans and designers.
