In SOURDOUGH CYBORG, the kitchen becomes a sensory laboratory for interspecies relationships.

The kitchen as a laboratory for the interspecies relationship between humans and microbes: The installation SOURDOUGH CYBORG brings to life Maciej Chmara’s research on experimental cuisine and the related questions of sensuality, microbiology, and neuroscience. Building on primatologist Richard Wrangham’s “Cooking Ape Hypothesis”, cooking is treated not as a craft but as a form of physical cognition and made measurable as an experience through neuro cooking: A wearable device records neural and physical signals, interprets them, and ultimately translates them into vibrotactile feedback. Other senses are not neglected in SOURDOUGH CYBORG either. For example, “Dough Tone” gives invisible microorganisms a voice and presents fermentation processes as music.
