Thinking about public space and the design and responsible use thereof are fundamental to the functioning of a society – especially in a restricted, urban context. In an open call launched before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and Erste Bank called for the submission of projects, ideas and concepts that demonstrate new approaches to the use and temporary use of vacant plots. Such temporary uses do not only arise as a result of precarious necessity and coercion but also because of the deep commitment of many individuals. For this reason, such spaces have an open character. Thanks to the crisis, this subject is now more relevant than ever! The talk will offer experts the opportunity to cover a broad range of subjects in the fields of urban planning, interpersonal communication in times of crisis and social differences.
