KULTURHAUPTSTADT EUROPAS – VESZPRÉM-BALATON 2023: Open Call Builder Summit

We are especially pleased to welcome one of the cultural capitals of Europe 2023, VESZPRÉM-BALATON, again this year on our PLATFORM. What will be shown at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK in autumn is still a secret, but now there is already the possibility to apply for the Hello Wood Festival via an open call – either as participant or team leader.

Hello Wood’s Festival is back at it again in 2023!

Hello Wood is extremely excited to announce that their international summer school & festival for architecture is back for2023! After a 3 year hiatus, the extraordinary summer school is is returning to Hungary in July. Hello Wood is raising thebar this year: a permanent central installation/community space, more people, bigger projects, more days, internationaldesigner superstars, and an amazing closing music festival with more than 1000 visitors in the mesmerizing landscape of post-apocalyptic basalt quarry.

There have been many architecture summer schools & festivals in the history of Hello Wood, but none on the scale of this summer’s promising event, the annual Hello Wood Builder Summit, which will take place in Zalahaláp, Hungary,from 6th to 15th July.

How to Apply

To participate in the Hello Wood Builder Summit and realise a project, applicants can either apply as a team leader or asa participant. Team leaders must submit a project proposal reflecting their thoughts regarding the topic, students canapply by submitting their portfolio and motivational letter.

Hello Wood invites the team leaders to prepare thought-provoking pitches for the open call. Applicants can submit anyconcept tackling important questions of our age, but it must also touch on the main topics. Hello Wood is looking for allkinds of designs; including wooden installations, land art projects, virtual/augmented reality projects. The project size isnot limited.

There will be one team for every 12-16 students, which means that you can count on at least 12 pairs of helpful handsduring the building process. A schedule must be included in the application, which includes a list of the materialsrequired to construct the installation. Team leaders can apply collectively in groups consisting of 1-4 people.

Hello Wood provides materials listed below:

↘ Timber beams and planks (Each project can use approximately 2 m3 of wooden beams)
↘ Screws and nails
↘ Surface treatment / paint

Local materials can also be used (found on the location - Haláp-bánya,

Zalahaláp, Hungary). Any additional materials must be discussed with Hello Wood in advance

The deadline for the normal Entry is 30th April, the Late Entry period ends on 31st May.

If you are currently or previously in the last 4 years have been an architect/ landscape architect/designer/art student and over 18, you can easily apply by filling out the registration form. You must prepare your personal portfolio and a motivational letter about why you want to participate in the event.

If accepted, the festival fee will cover your lodging, 3 meals per day, access to lectures by prominent internationaldesigners/architects/artists, a reference in your portfolio, and admission to the festival, where you can see amazing performances.

If you collect a group of 10 people, you get a 20% discount on the given price of the submission period. All Hello Wood needs is your name mentioned in the registration form.
