Festival Headquarters Sophienspital
Festival Headquarters Sophienspital
An urban oasis par excellence, a piece of land surrounded by a park, formerly closed to the public, that has been awakened from its slumber. The eclectic building where the Center for Cummunity Medicine was located, near the Westbahnhof railway station, has been the home of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK for ten days in 2018. In a dead-end street, at a location that offers endless possibilites from its rooftop terrace to the 19th century structure, protected as a historic monument, the festival has helped pave the way for the property to become an educational and residential campus. This subsequent use of the Sophienspital, which was built from 1879 to 1881, is the largest urban development project involving public property near Vienna's center. A refuge accented by a wonderful population of trees, an architecturally interesting ensemble that was last added to in the late 1990s by Viennese architect Martin Kohlbauer - an urban idyll as a launching pad for a new design universe!
