Somewhere different every year, but always at the heart of things: The nomadic Festival Headquarters is one of the geographic centerpieces of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. It offers a unique architectural portal, through which visitors find their way into the festival and, hence, the Focus District. In 2021, the Festival Headquarters of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK was located on Sachsenplatz, in the heart of beautiful Brigittenau. Far beyond the walls of the airy industrial halls, visitors experienced one thing in particular: the sense of neighborhood.

While this sense of neighborhood was especially apparent in the open exchange offered by the contributions to the exhibition in the former industrial spaces, this year’s Festival Headquarters was also particularly strongly integrated into its immediate surroundings via its courtyard (mama.matters), forecourt (Creative Region, uttnext (urbanthinktank_next), Mostlikely), and park (Education). In line with the much-noticed message on the banner in the courtyard (“Design für alle!”), the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK clearly showed how design can be made accessible to everyone: Easily understandable signage (Robert Rüf, Bueronardin), changing settings for talks (TREWIT), and the contagiously friendly atmosphere in the pop-up café (Caffè vom See) were further key elements of this unforgettable place of exploration, experience, and exchange.

The doors to the Festival Headquarters 2021 were kindly opened by REALITA and BETHA Zwerenz & Krause.
